- THE INTERNATIONAL PATTERN & ITS ANOMALIES -
-10-
The deck below was published by the artist himself. Because
the original drawings were of a different scale than the size of regular
playing cards, each card has a black background surrounding the original
drawing. Not the best solution in our opinion. The designs seem to have been
made for wide cards, so why not print them on wide cards against a white
background to diffuse any differences in scale? Probably a question of money.
The
deck is a transformation deck, so all the number cards have illustrations too.
But on the courts the international pattern has been used as base for ingenious
drawings in the background and a humorous text has been placed over the center
design. Here the faces of the courts have been left intact for most part, just
like their attributes.
The "Cardoons SF Fantasy Poker" deck was designed by E. Michael Blake and published in 2002, in a limited edition of two thousand decks.
At my request the Ace of Diamonds has been signed by the artist for this deck only.
All the cards, including the number cards, have a drawing and text. There's no sequence or story, each card has a different joke. The designs and humor resemble to that of the "underground" comics from the 1970's.
Michael Blake is working on a digital, redrawn version of the same designs, but we haven't seen that published yet.
