A COMPARISON OF SOME PIPS

On all these pips the loss of detail clouds the game or activity of the children.

What looks like a smudge on the 6 of diamonds from Kinderkarten II turns out to be a butterfly.

These last two cards are illustrative for our conclusion that our deck is probably the elder one of the two. It's easier to make a smudge out of a butterfly than to interpret a smudge as a butterfly. And there are also details on other cards from our deck, that couldn't have been thought up if Kinderkarten II would have been the elder one. Klaus-Jürgen wrote me that he believes that all these decks date from the 1840 - 1850 era and we tend to agree.  The makers of both these decks are unknown, but in their book Klaus-Jürgen and Friedler have suggested a possible connection with the Niebuhr's Kinderkarten deck from the collection of the Hamburg Historical Museum, which can be seen through the Kinderkarten I link here below.
