We have never collected Tarot
decks, but still have a few in the collection. Either by artists that we liked
or as in this case by a manufacturer that we liked. And Dondorf has always
attracted us by the quality of the chromolithographic printing. So, as promised
last week, today's lockdown deck is Dondorf's Tarot deck, originally printed in
lithography and published as "Tarot Microscopique" since 1858.
However, our deck is from the 3rd variant, printed in chromolithography and
published as "Nr. 345 Tarok" between 1902 and 1933. I remember finding
the deck during one of the large antique fairs at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht (NL)
and the excitement of buying it pretty cheap. And I just looked at Miriam's file
card and saw, that I paid € 40 for it in November 2003.
Each suit is dedicated to a certain country: Spades - Russia, Hearts - France,
Clubs - Germany and Diamonds - England. Rulers and important figures on the
courts, views on the aces.
