WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

-2-

This deck was printed by Fournier from Vitoria, Spain, and published as "Shakespeare". We bought it in Spain in 1998, but it could be somewhat older.

The deck is a reproduction of an antique deck, that was printed and published by Chas. Goodall & Son from London. The original deck was printed in chromolithography, but the reproduction was printed in offset of course. The original is much nicer, but we'll have to wait until an affordable example comes along.

The deck shows characters from Shakespeare's work on the courts. The Aces are beautifully illustrated and each one bears the name of the original maker and the name of the play that is depicted in each suit. The courts of that suit show characters from that play. Depicted work: Julius Caesar, Henry VIII, King Lear and Henry V.

The original deck didn't come with a joker and this explains the clear difference in style.

The deck consists of 52 cards and 3 identical jokers and a leaflet.
