MONTELBAANS TOWER

(OUDE SCHANS)

The Montelbaans Tower was build outside the city walls in 1512 as a  sentinel, a guardian tower to protect the largest ship building site of the world in the 16th century. The steeple was added in 1606. It was Rembrandt’s favorite tower and obviously still is interesting for the Dutch only. No foreign made aces depict this tower and the Oude Schans canal.

These 3 aces were all produced by the Speelkaartenfabriek Nederland from Amsterdam:
The first comes from the Amstel version of the Neerlandia A deck, around 1915.
The second from a souvenir deck that was published as Hollandia around 1913.
The third is from a second, less luxurious, edition of the Hollandia deck, published in 1928.

In the 16th century the Montelbaans Tower was outside the city walls. To enter the city again from here, one had to find the nearest entrance. Curious? Click HERE
