PIN-UP'S & EROTICA

-40-

This deck was made in the USA and published there c1960. It's a deck that we had never seen before, a showcase of body builders. The deck reminded us of the ads for this "sport" in obscure magazines in the late 1950's and early 1960's, often together there with ads for special pairs of glasses that could see through clothes and other weird gadgets.

On our CD we have 2 decks of male pin-up cards, both from the US and the earliest is from the 1970's. This deck could be seen as a predecessor of those decks and one of the first decks made for the gay community. But is it a pin-up deck? Well, there was one person who saw it as such,  as he wrote "men Pinup" on the box. And we tend to agree. For that time frame this could be seen as a form of pin-up deck for men.

It also has one of the characteristics of early female pin-up decks. Some of the men have posed in their sport pants, but others have definitely posed in the (frontal) nude and these photo's were later "censored". In the early female pin-up decks the women were rendered sexless in frontal pictures by spray-painting their most private parts in an even gray tone. Spray-painting their manhood away was probably not an option for men, so here it's done by adding a sports pant. On some pictures there are visible strings to complete the illusion of pants, on others there are no strings attached and the censoring is more obvious.

The deck was probably printed by a small print shop for a cheap edition. There's no use of red for the red suits and the backs are plain green. So it's difficult to keep the suits apart, especially the spades and hearts. Illustrative for this is the switching of the Queens here below.........

The deck consists of 52 cards and 1 joker.

The box is made of blank carton. There are remains of a playing card stamp on the box, so it's probably not a real under-the-counter deck, but just has the looks of one.
